To  recognize and honour outstanding journalism on election issues, RESPECT – a joint program of the Indonesian Association for Media Development (PPMN) and the Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem) — invites journalists from multiplatform media in Southeast Asia  (Brunei, Cambodia,  East Timor, Indonesia, Laos , Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) to join this new regional award competition.

ExCel  Award competition seeks to recognize outstanding journalism reports about elections in Southeast Asia, ranging from news and features to investigative story that not only raise public awareness but impact society.

Award Categories:

  1. Best Breaking News (Exclusive or any kind of urgent update on news development)
  2. Best Feature/In-depth Story (Special-interest articles rich in details)
  3. Best Investigation Story (news reporting that uncovers inconvenient truths)
  4. Best Commentary (Personal comments or opinion on a newly published article or situation)

Awards will be given to the most outstanding report in each of four news categories:

  1. Text
  2. Video
  3. Audio
  4. Multimedia

Published news reports and articles may range from the following topic:

  1. Combatting electoral corruption;
  2. Strengthening election law enforcement;
  3. Improving accountability in election administration;
  4. Improving representation and inclusive participation in elections and political processes (with a focus on gender consideration);
  5. Protecting against media bias in reporting on elections;
  6. Strengthening oversight of campaign;
  7. Political party finance;
  8. Election open data;
  9. Inclusivity of election

Eligibility for entries:

  • Reports should be produced by journalists or teams of journalists working in media operating in Southeast Asia (see above information about countries)
  • Entries must have been published or broadcast by local or national media outlets from January 1st, 2017 to August 31st, 2019.
  • Entries in languages other than English should be accompanied by English translations.

Winners will be selected by a panel comprised of senior journalists and media experts from the region.

Deadline for submission:  November 10th, 2019. Allowed to submit more than one journalistic work.

Winners will receive in total $15.000 and be invited to receive their awards at a regional journalism conference in Jakarta in November 2019.
